Big Buck in the city of Duluth

The Story of “Hector”

The Greysolon Buck

One weekend, a spontaneous house search revealed a home for sale that had a small workshop in the basement. Too excited to wait, the night before the showing, we drove down the alley to peek at the back of the house in the dark. Suddenly, a buck with a huge rack of antlers emerged from the woods next to the alley. (See picture!)

He stood in front of the car and stared directly at us. "We held our breaths in amazement, having never seen a deer with such huge antlers in the city. It seemed like a moment that froze time as we stared at each other. Then he trotted off across the yards. We took his appearance as a sign that we were supposed to live in that house, and we bought it the next day. To commemorate that encounter, Wilmer created The Greysolon Buck for the garden. Named after his brother, Hector, the life-sized buck stands alert and watches over Greysolon Road and the neighborhood.
